Not too long ago, I did a post about the Orange Vegas, probably the cheapest touchscreen phone ever to come to the UK. And you may remember that I quite liked it, but had absolutely no clue what operating system it was running on. It ain’t Windows Mobile, it ain’t Android… so I figured, maybe if I could find out who actually makes the phone, it might help in finding out the OS.
After a quick Google-based bloodhound-hunt, I’ve found out. The Orange Vegas is actually a ZTE X760.
Now, you may very well not have heard of ZTE, because they’re not a particularly well-known brand over here. However, they did make a USB Modem Stick for Three, and it rocked, so the pedigree can’t be too bad! So, then, armed with the knowledge it’s actually a ZTE X760, do I now know what the operating system is?
Ah-ha!
No…
Annoyingly, even after all that searching, I’m still none the wiser on what’s powering it. I’d put good money on it being a non-standard operating system, that the Chinese, both legitimate manufacturers and bootleggers, are so fond of. One thing’s for sure, though, despite it being in no way even close to being a smartphone (I can’t imagine the Palm Pre shaking in its boots), the interface is actually pretty nice.
And how do I know that? Ah, well, y’see, it turns out that since I did the post on it, a lass on Youtube has done her own video review of it. And since it’s nice to get other views on mobile phones besides mine (which will always be more focused on high-tech stuff, since that’s the kind of geek I am), here’s the video review in full (oh, and she says it’s her first review, in the video itself, so be nice):
There you go, y’see, it’s not just me saying it’s worth buying! Oddly, though, despite it being cheap and not-a-smartphone, I’m probably as excited about playing with one of these as I am with the HTC Magic.
Innit funny how the world works!
Have you bought yourself an Orange Vegas? Do you like the combo of touchscreen and dirt cheap price? Leave us a comment and have your say!

Hi i have an Orange Vegas. I brought it the day after it came out. It is really super cute, i have the pink one. It is the 1st touch screen i have owned and i got it because it is cheap and pink!
The touch screen is really responsive when texting (not using predictive as i never use that). The hand writting bit is just a waste of time really as it really, really slow as you have to do a letter at a time.
There is a really random thing with the message outbox…i can’t find it anywhere! It asks if i would like to save texts to it and the log book says it has one, but it really isn’t there.
Also the scroll bars at the sides of things are hard to use.
I don’t find the stylus hard to use but i don’t have another to compair it to.
Another problem is downloading things. This mobile is not listed in the drop down menu on the orange website. I spent ages at the phone shop the day after i got the mobile while we tried to download stuff but it just never happened. I contacted Orange but they never got back to me. You must be able to download stuff as on the game menu it says ‘Games’ yet there is only one game in there.
Also, i recieved 2 picture messages and 1 video and the photo inbox was full. You have to save them to the memory card and delete the inbox.
You really have to buy a memory card for it as the phone couldn’t even save two photos without it.
Another thing is when setting a picture as a wall paper, all the stuff on the screen is in the way of it. Yeah you can set the time and date not to show, but there is still a huge grey box across the screen.
Composing a text message is a bit weird too. There isn’t a ‘Compose message’ bit above the inbox like usual. You have to either go to the persons name in contacts, reply to a text they have sent you (ok if they have already sent one!) or press sideways on the wheel button. Just a bit of a farse really.
Then there is the turning itself off thing which is by far the most annoying thing, and the reason i got rid of my last mobile and brought this one! (My last one was about 10million years old though so it had an excuse). If you don’t lay the Vegas down gently and it taps down it will turn itself off!! It turns off in my handbag too. This obviously really isn’t good. To start with i thought it maybe because it wasn’t charged. But i charge it loads as i don’t think it lasts very long. I have now obviously found out that it just can’t handle normal handeling. Oh and i left it in my car while i was at work tonight and it had turned itself off and wouldn’t turn on at the end of my shift! That isn’t any good if i had broken down or something.
So unfortunately how ever cute i think the lil mobile is and how ever cheap it is (Even if it was only tenner) there is no point having a mobile that won’t stay switched on.
I will be taking it back tomorrow
I will hopefully get the pink LG Cookie as that is only £30 more in phones 4 u. Hope i will have more luck with a moble that has been out longer. Fingers crossed.
Gutted the Vegas is going.
Cheers, Laura T.

Ah! Her Vegas has an outbox!? I saw it!! My message bit does not have it! I can take photos to prove this. How bizzar. Maybe i just have a dodgy one. Hmm, i would really like to hear from more people that have this mobile. I may try another Vegas, hmm or maybe not as the download problem is still there even if i got an outbox and a phone that didn’t turn off. Very bizzar.

I bought one of these to replace my somewhat disintegrating Ericsson P800. That was a lovely phone with an excellent handwriting recognition. Anyway, I upgraded to the Vegas and I am struggling to find one feature that I like.
The stylus is a complete joke. It’s so thin that one doesn’t know that one is holding it and it telescopes from minuscule to tiny.
The touch screen is woefully inaccurate; tapping on an item often triggers the next one below it. I’ve calibrated it so many times and I think that I am going to have to miscalibrate it so that it works. Clicking on an item seems to take an age to register that it’s coming painful.
Now to the handwriting recognition. With the P800, which I wanted to get a suitable replacement, the recognition is fast and accurate. I can write a 160 character message in less than a minute. With the Vegas I write a letter and then about half a second later the wrong letter appears. Then there’s the complete mishmash of screens which appear and don’t appear to have no coherence. I bought this phone as I wanted to text messages and, frankly it’s useless in this department. When one finishes the text message and preparing to send there seems to be excessive layers which doesn’t do anything but add to the frustration.
When the phone is locked and a text arrives releasing the lock involves some sort of insane hokey-kokey where one is told to press the left key, then the right, the left, the right for any number of times and then it finally releases.
My P800 is falling apart. The front vanished a long time ago. The screen is scratched to bits, the voice part works only intermittently and it should have thrown into landfill long ago. But, I can see that the Vegas will be going there first. The P800 may be ancient in terms of handsets but it’s far superior to the Vegas.
The Vegas is really, really poor. It’s clumsy to use and infuriating at best. It feels as if I have a prototype rather than a finished production. I wouldn’t recommend one at all.

you hold the menu key to lock the keys and you go into settings, phone settings and rofiles to put it on silent. this phone is awesome. i just bought one and i have no complaints except for the lack of windows live linkage on the orange site.

i just got this phone i think its ok but i cant set a message tone its just stupid sounds and i dont like the camera quality its not that good and i cant find anything like games and themes for this i really want another phone now!!
July 26th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
i actually just got this phone today, and it works fine, absolutely no problems at all. i really don’t get people who complain because the “stylus is to thin” or it “doesn’t calibrate properly” it just sounds like you intentionally pick out the flaws in things, there is no such thing as a perfect touch screen may i point out. the vegas, is a good phone, what more do you really need from a phone other than the function to phone and text???
August 4th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
hi, i got the orange vegas today and so far i love it but its my firsy touch screen so nothing to compare it to! but i want to put my own o2 sim in it so i can keep my own number but its asking for a NP code?? any one no wat this is or wat the code might actually be?? please help xx
August 5th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Ah. The problem is that the Vegas is locked to Orange, so you can only use an Orange sim in it. That NP code unlocks it to use another sim, but you’d need to contact Orange to get it, and I’m not sure if they’ll let you have it this soon after buying the phone. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
August 13th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I’ve been liking this phone once I’d bought the memory card. Today though I have discovered a problem. Yesterday whilst using the calendar on the phone I could put in tasks – today nothing. Any suggestions?
August 17th, 2009 at 8:43 am
The orange shop told me when i bought this phone no return unless faulty, I should have walked away then, No java support, very poor browser and turns itself of for no reason. Currently trying to sell it on cheap. I should have bought the LG Cookie only about £30 more.
August 19th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
does anybody know what video format i have to use to put videos on there!! iv tried just downloading things and they wont play!
September 1st, 2009 at 2:08 pm
DON’T BUY ORANGE!
In the past 2 weeks I have had my Vegas in twice for repair. I bought it in June. The first time I took it in, AUG 15th the screen had frozen. The assistant said “it looks like there’s been water inside it” – There definitely hadn’t. I asked for a replacement as it was only 2 months old. He said he could only send it off for repair due to the “water”. I was adamant it hadn’t been near any water but I didn’t have a leg to stand on and they sent it for repair. He noted on the repair form Existing Damage/Scratches “NONE”. I received it back last Friday 28th August. I asked the different assistant if it mentioned water. She said “No, they’ve replaced a couple of parts – they wouldn’t have repaired it if it had been in water!” The day after collection, I sent and received 2 texts – my phone froze again! I returned to the same shop. He again said he couldn’t replace it only send it for repair. This time he noted on the repair form Existing Damage/Scratches – “GENERAL WEAR AND TEAR”. The phone was in no different condition than when I left it last time when the assistant wrote NONE in the same box. In my opinion the staff in the shops don’t know what they’re doing. Try looking for help on the internet site – it’s impossible. I eventually rang them via another mobile and asked for their complaints address. It’s a PO BOX in Bristol. Orange are non existant! I will not be buying one of their mobiles ever again. I know faults do occur – but it wasn’t of my making! I’ll go back to NOKIA.

Ive just got my vegas & I love it, although texting is a bit tricky, but then I havn’t had a touchscreen phone before. Thanks to Dean for telling me how to lock it, the instruction booklet is a bit rubbish.I must have got a good one as everything works, although i cant find the MP3 player & cnat download anything onto it.You need to get a pac code from o2 & give it to orange to keep your old number.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Hey to set music as a ring tone you have to make your onw profile(loud, silent)and set the music you want as the music when you costemise it…work this out by mucking around with it
September 23rd, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Nice little phone. Great value for money.
Pros: Great media player and comes with 1GB micro SD as standard (2GB was supplied in mine so I guess they have upgraded the spec). Easy to use touchscreen with thumb or stylus (2 supplied). Excellent battery life. Bluetooth. Camera is good enough for fun photos on a night out. Really loud and clear built in speaker for music playback – one of the best I’ve ever heard! Nice, clear, easy to use interface.
Cons: Interface lag is just slightly slow. Texting isn’t great, slight processing pause when you press space means you have to type slowly or else lose the first letter of the next word. No sentence case mode. Just upper or lower. Too many confirms and click-throughs when sending texts. Internet is sloooow! Half speed GPRS!! Plus NO java support so forget google maps, opera or email clients. Received calls sound a bit warm and muddy.
Summary: If you want a cheap phone that will impress your mates with the added bonus of being an excellent music player but don’t type long texts, surf the net or care much for call quality it’s ideal.
Alternative summary: An absolutely top notch music player that just happens to have a mobile phone built in!!

i brought this phone the other day and i think it it is worth its money. it only costs 50 quid what do u expect well worth it , i hate that you cant have a picture as your wall papper coz of that wierd grey bit at the otp, also does any one know how i can set it to private number. when you go to send a text if you do it by going to messages rather than doing it from your phone book go to save and send it then appears in outbox, and wish the game was better, can u get more games for it ? but for 50 quid i well chuffed with it,
October 8th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Y’know what, I’m overwhelmed by the number of people who’ve bought this phone, and chosen to give us a review on these comments. Y’see, THAT is why you guys reading this rock, this is all top stuff, so keep the reviews coming!
Who’d have thunk it from a phone that costs less than fifty quid, that ain’t one of the big hitters on the market!
Oh, and also, @SeanMandrake, I had a look at the link attached to your name, and your band ROCKS, dude. S’my kinda music, that is, although, oddly, that’s not the kind of music I play in my band (probably because I can’t play twin bass drums very well…). We’re more old school stuff like Forever Autumn. Classic song, that.

I have this phone and it does everything i needed it to do one time it woulldnt let me film, but all i had to do is get a memory card. i’d recomend this phone to anyone its really cheap too for touch screen!! x x Hope this helps!!
October 18th, 2009 at 11:53 am
hey i bought an orange vegas about 2 months ago for forty quid off the orange website & its the best phone i’ve had! there is two teeny things i wish i could change. 1. The stylus is lost easily, i dropped myne in my mams car & its a gonner. and 2. you have to re orientate the screen every couple of weeks but this takes 30 seconds. Its a really compact & cute phone, more popular with the under 30’s and i would definately recommend it. 10 out of 10!
October 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 pm
i need the np-code
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
You need to speak to Orange to get the NP Code, since that’s the code they generate to unlock the phone.
November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

November 18th, 2009 at 10:40 am
ey wassup i got this phone as well its very good. however you cant download games for that because it doesnt support java games.:( but its is cheap and has a good design. worth for money!!!!
November 21st, 2009 at 11:57 am
How the hell do i get this phone repaired? My daughter cracked the screen after a week, the compnay that the Orange shop gave me the contact details for repair just sends you to the manufacturer that don’t do repairs(!!), and I cannot find anyone else who will touch it!!
Surely someone must be able to repair it???
November 27th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
bought this phone today, and already i have had to ring for a replacement
November 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I recently bought the vegas and personally i think it is brilliant for the price but whats really annoying me is the fact i cant set a song for my message tone. I can only get the tones that are already on there..
Does anyone know if you can and how you set it to be a song please? x

just got the vegas phone & cant get the computer to recognise it with the lead provided .can any one tell me how to connect it?
the instruction book isnt any good
January 24th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Listen everyone, very closely…
Please read the blurb BEFORE you buy this phone. Firstly it is a phone and as this it works very well indeed. As a touch phone it works well too. The menu system is logical and well built however the bespoke Orange OS is still a little unfriendly in that it is clunky and doesnt give todays user enough control to effect various functions we have all gotten used to with other phones. Regardless, this is no Google or “i” phone either so please don’t expect it to function like one. At less than £50 PAYG it never intends to be, so please don’t think it will be.
Most importantly READ THE BOX to see what it can do or better still play with one in the shop. Don’t let the Seller Agents tell you this and that. If you believe them it’s your fault.
Cons:
Texting functions are no way near even a nokia 3110 of 10 years ago. All too labourious to enter and send/reply.
No ability to actually reply using a video unless it has already been recorded.
Sending texts are not saved unless you specify to do so.
The instruction manual doesn’t explain how to do most functions.
As there is no java support the only game is all you have. No downloads either.
You must buy at least a 1GB sd card otherwise camera function won’t take 1 high quality? photo. Takes upto 4GB memcard only.
Only G data connectivity (not even Edge or 3G).
Browser is ok but cannot connect to Internet without difficulty.
Only WAP and cannot handle WAP sites too well either.
1.3 MP camera is only good for fun snaps.
Pros:
Bluetooth profiles work seemlessly.
Uses mini USB to charge.
When connected to a PC can be used as a storage memstick, a modem or webcam (only phone to do this webcam element).
Good reception for calls and data.
Battery life is good for a week with BT on.
Mp3 player and radio built in.
Overall good looks and cheap.
A great and very good looking phone (borrowing very heavily from HTC’s Touch v1 phone) for the price but with basic shortcomings meaning that it frustrates in places where even cheaper phones never did.
Great value and a good way to afford a “touch” just don’t expect too much at this price and it won’t disappoint.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:53 pm
operating system is MTK a chinese system, the most chinese phones use this system

Hi,
I have this phone, the ZTE X760, but not as the “Orange Vegas” but as the “T-Mobile Vairy Touch”, that’s the way you can buy it over here in the Netherlands.
I also don’t know what OS it uses, but what I do see is that whoever sells the phone (I mean which provider, like Vodacom or Vodafone or how is it called in Africa, Orange in the UK, T-Mobile in the Netherlands, etc.) also makes quite a lot of adjustments to it. So does my menu and things look quite different to yours – since mine is customized by T-Mobile and yours by Orange.
It is a nice phone, and very cheap (it was 60 euros over here), but you shouldn’t expect too much – I can’t even install games on it, I only have the standard game Magicsushi.
