Right, my turn to look at a phone, instead of Technical Markus (odd role reversal, there: he gets the sensible, tough one, and I get the super advanced one? Weird!)
So, here I go with my thoughts on the new Nokia N82. Well, first off, this phone has a reputation for doing everything. People have spoken at great length about what it can do, but is it really as its list of features would have you believe?
Well…
YES!

First stop, the camera, since the first thing anybody does when they play with a phone is go, “Ooh, what’s the camera like?” Well, I’m happy to report it’s stunning. Sporting a huge 5 megapixels, with Carl Zeiss lens and xenon flash, it really is a viable replacement for your digital camera. And since that saves you taking two bottles into the showe- sorry, two devices out with you when one will do, that’s a good thing.
And then, of course, there’s the music player, which is as good, if not better, than many a standalone mp3 player. Oh, and of course, let’s not forget that since the Nokia N82’s also a phone, it will let you download music on the move. So, that’s another box (your mp3 player) you can leave at home.
And then you’ve got the big killer app on the N82: GPS, with FREE maps. Completely free maps. As in, according to Nokia’s Nseries site, you only pay for data access, and NOT for any of the maps. That’s just astounding, AND it benefits you because… well, because you save cash, and don’t get lost, all at the same time.
Not to mention that it means you can leave yet another box (your satnav) at home, too. So, let’s tot up.
Instead of taking 4 devices out with you (phone, camera, mp3 player, satnav), you only have to take 1, and it’s a sexy little beast, and it’s got super fast internet on it, as well, so you can also surf at the speed of light.
Makes sense, eh? You’d best have a look at the Nokia N82 for yourself then, and see if you agree!

Good analysis. The feature I liked best is its smartness as compared to bulky N95.

The Nokia N82 is in a true sense a multimedia mobile handset. It has started Nokia’s new chapter in multimedia phones and internet. With the introduction of every device Nokia keeps on improving, this is the quality of Nokia, which I like the most

Nokia is introducing beautiful sexy and sleekly designed cell phones - super. Nokia N82 cover all the grounds of mobile phone.

however we can’t ignore the fact that the Nseries phones have been getting a little too lag for a mobile.

Only problem with the handset is the voice navigation will be an additional cost. Only the maps are free. Nevertheless, a great handset.

Hi Rahul,
Deals are live on the site for all the handsets you are looking at. The Nokia N82 is still a pre order but the Nokia N81 and Nokia N95 are both in stock.

Just got one from O2 and it is exactly what I was looking for. Smarter than the N95 and feels better in the hand. Was going to go for the Viewty but got put off by a few features. I’m still exploring all the features - but mine came with the voice navigation. The only annoying thing is the size of the buttons - still usable but you will need fingernails. Also, it is a shame the onboard memory is low (128MB I think). But I’m going to get a bigger card and already converting DVDs to watch on it.

Hi Mark,
I agree with you on the keys, very ericssonesque. Shame really as Nokia are normally quite generous with the keypads.

The 5mp camera isn’t all that. it lacks clarity at normal distances when flash is used/needed. They could improve on the software as well. I.E. color setting on camera is not saved and you have to constantly change it to Vivid for every picture you would like to take. call log does not display phone number of saved contact - i don’t know where they called me from unless i dig deep into the menu - office, home, shop-and use copy/edit number option. Nokia has always in my mind had a reputation for convienence as far as functions and shortcuts so i’m a little disappointed. One more thing to mention.. the nokia 7250 groups the same callers so that it shows date and time of each call. with the N82 if the same person calls you twenty times it will list them twenty times and clear up the other previous callers which sucks since i’m use to the previous. seems like they are going backwards. 7250 was made like 7 years ago - disappointing. but i hope the software upgrade fixes all my complaints - then i’d be a very happy camper.

Does the N82 have mobile TV???
February 1st, 2008 at 11:38 am
Well, it’s 3G so you can stream videos and so on (for example, like watching the Kerrang channel on a 3 mobile, something I do quite regularly), from the internet, but it doesn’t have full mobile TV in the “DVB-H” sense.
It’ll be a while longer before we get full DVB-H over here.
But yes, you can watch downloaded AND streaming videos, and since what the networks currently call mobile TV uses streaming videos, in that sense, you CAN get it on your phone.

I have this phone now for almost a week and i still can’t stop playing with it
It has so many options and with a big mini-sd card in it it becomes like a little portable pc with fast (tnx to wifi connection) & full internet browser.
Battery power could have been a little stronger, but still : 10 hours of mp3 listening before having an emty battery is not a bad time.
I can add as much extra games or applications as I want, there doesn’t seem to be a limit (unless like with my previous nokia 6230, where i could only add 35 games/apps)
The camera works great and if u don’t zoom with it it records quite a decent movie in mpg format, the built in xenon flitser works great in the dark for taking excellent pictures.
The closable shutter is a nice improvement so the lens stays clean at all time
Route 66 mobile also works like a charm on the n82 so nokia maps becomes no longer needed to find my way
Only thing I miss are some simple programs like a timer/chrono wich isn’t supported anymore, also at this moment it seems to be impossible to show phone numbers together with names in the contact list, i have to edit the name before i see the phone number.
And last but not least, the back of the phone, wich holds the battery, is too easy to remove, when i take it out of my pocket, the cover sometimes is almost removed by itself, wich makes me think it isn’t such a strong cover.
Also, I would have liked it very much if they would have added the ‘fm transmitter’ in this device also, wich can send music from your phone on every free fm location (for example it’s very usefull in your car)
All by all I give this phone 9.5/10 because it’s very complete and replaces many other things like mp3player, camera, tomtom, calculator, watch, etc but still it is a very a pocketfriendly pda that looks like a normal phone
