Tetris is the biggest-selling mobile phone game of all time, it was confirmed yesterday (January 21st).
The classic block-dropping puzzle game, which was first created by Russian Alexey Pajitnov in 1984, has reportedly received over 100 million paid downloads since 2005.
Adam Sussman, vice-president of worldwide publishing at EA Mobile – the exclusive mobile publisher for Tetris – explained that the success is down to the game’s enduring appeal.
"Tetris is the biggest franchise in mobile gaming, which speaks to the evergreen nature of the brand and the fact that it translates to any platform," he said.
"[We have been able] to optimally adapt Tetris to the ever-evolving handset market, while keeping the true spirit of the game alive."
Furthermore, G-mode, the exclusive distributor of the game in Japan, added that its Tetris League creation has already been played on almost 100 million occasions.
A study released by BMC Research Notes last year indicated that people who play Tetris regularly develop a thicker cortex in the brain, which aids critical thinking and co-ordinated movement.
