Symbian and Windows Mobile phones get new Youtube app

Youtube app goes live for Symbian and Windows MobileAccording to Mobile Burn, a new Youtube app has found its way into the wild, that lets mobile phone users watch videos from the popular vid site on their phones. Of course, you may ask why this new app is worth reporting on, since most phones can, well, already do that, through their own web browsers. And even if they can’t, there are already loads of Youtube apps out there, right?

Ah yes, but this new one is actually from Youtube themselves, y’see.

As for why it’s a better bet than the competition, David Stewart of Youtube Product Marketing states that the new app is 90% faster when you’re starting it up, searching for videos, or playing them. It’s optimised for either WiFi or 3G/HSDPA connections, too, so you should get a much better quality of playback, as well.

And yes, I am installing it on my Sony Ericsson X1, as I’m typing this, so expect a full hands-on in the not very distant future…

As for supported devices, it’s been written for Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile. So, as long as your phone runs one of those two (although there’s a bit of a proviso on which Nokia S60 devices it’ll run on… older ones don’t seem to get a look in), then you’ll be able to watch videos as speeds that preliminary testing indicates will be “god almighty, that’s fast”…

However, notable by their absence, on the list of supported phones, are any of the new breed of Symbian touch phones, like the 5800. On would hope they get supported soon, otherwise people who get the Nokia N97 or the Sony Ericsson Idou, for example, might be onto a loser…

(EDIT: Please note, for Symbian devices, the app is only available on Series 60 phones, and NOT UIQ phones.)

Full hands-on coming soon! Subscribe now to make sure you don’t miss out on seeing it!
