Ah, another day, another visual interface with a phone that ISN’T the phone’s screen, and sounds more like something out Star Trek…
This time, it really is a properly sci-fi method, according to a story on Symbian-Freak. We’ve had tiny laser projectors, we’ve had glasses that project an image onto the lens. Now, we go to the extreme, with a screen built into… a contact lens?!
I’m genuinely intrigued how this will pan out. I’m not saying I want one, because I think it might freak me out having a message in 37-foot high letters, superimposed on the real world. Especially if someone thought they were being clever and texted “Wake up, Neo…” to me. That would freak me out.
But apart from me being a scared-o coward, I can see a lot of genuine potential here. There are challenges, to be sure, such as finding ways to get the massive amounts of circuitry needed into a small lens, that’s made of a material that won’t damage the eye (and therefore, probably wouldn’t survive the manufacturing process). Then, they need to ensure it doesn’t go overspeed and burn someone’s eye out. Connect that up with mobile phones, maybe via Bluetooth (Blueeye?), and Bob’s your uncle!
Once that’s sorted, it could be kinda cool to be the only person seeing my messages.
Oh, to the researchers, if you can make it fire a light beam (well, ok, a laser) outwards, you will become my favourite people ever…
