Ever since I got my X1, I’ve been a convert to Windows Mobile, as any long-time readers will be aware. And although mine runs on WinMo 6.1, there are two new versions of Windows Mobile due within the next year and a bit. First up is 6.5, that’s appeared in a few places, most notably on some new devices at the Mobile World Congress. However, it’s Windows Mobile 7, due in 2010, that’s getting many people in a tizzy, as it promises to be a fully finger-friendly OS, that’s been redesigned from the ground up.
Well, according to WMPoweruser, we may have a glimpse of what WinMo 7 may actually look like, come next year.
Ooh, it’s like Window Mobile, but all nice looking!
Of course, it’s entirely possible that this could be a mock-up, and that the final version 7 will look nothing like it. Still, I have to admit, that is one pretty looking interface. It looks like it might actually be useful, too, with the sliding icons at the top seemingly giving instant, front-screen access to your favourite apps. More importantly, though, it has everything on one screen, something I prefer in a phone, which is probably why I use one of the custom Sony Ericsson panels (this one, in fact) on my X1, as my main homescreen.
Now, I’m sure that many among you would argue the need for Microsoft to give their OS a new front end, given that HTC are doing such a good job with the TouchFLO interface, for example. But here’s the thing, and this is why I’m a bit more excited about this possible layout for Windows Mobile 7: I don’t like TouchFLO.
There, I said it.
Don’t get me wrong, the HTC Touch HD is a brilliant looking phone, and has a huge screen, and bags upon bags of power. But I still don’t like TouchFLO, because I’ve decided I don’t like having to scroll through that ribbon thing at the bottom of the screen to get to app shortcuts. I want major shortcuts on the front screen, dammit! You know, something like the widgety interface on the Tocco Ultra. That kinda thing. But with Windows Mobile behind it.
So, in conclusion, no-one has any real idea if this screenshot is kosher or not, but if it is, I have to say, I rather like the look of it!
