Spotify has revealed that a quarter of a million people have now subscribed to its paid service, which allows music to be streamed directly to mobile phones.
The music streaming service is available on smartphone handsets including the iPhone and models that run on the Android operating system.
While 95 per cent of its users stream music on an ad-supported basis over the internet, 250,000 have now paid for the upgrade that removes advertising and allows access from mobile phones, reports the BBC.
With seven million European subscribers, the total number of people using the Spotify service has grown substantially in the past 12 months.
Founder of the service Daniel Ek reveals in an interview with the broadcaster that the past year has represented "the first time the number of subscribers has grown this dramatically".
In the coming year, Mr Ek tells the BBC that he hopes to increase the list of supported devices further, allowing more people to access Spotify.
