In one of those “if you write it, they will come” moments, mere days after we ran this story about Mobile Firefox, I had a look on Latest-Mobile, literally about 10 minutes ago, and what do I find? Mozilla have only gone and released sneaky peeks of what Mobile Firefox will be like.
It’s testament to Mozilla’s commitment to open source software, that instead of developing it all covert, like (which you know Microsoft would do), they whack the development log and code online, and say to people “tell us what you think, tell us what you want, and we’ll make it happen.”
I like that attitude, which, come to think of it, is probably why I like Firefox so much.
In fact, it’s not actually one user interface, it’s two, one made for touchscreen phones (eg/ the Sony Ericsson W960i), the other for… well, non-touchscreen phones (eg/ the Nokia N82). Best of all, though, is the list of what Mozilla want to make sure Mobile Firefox does:
- Tabbed web-browsing – an absolute must, as I find now, that I can’t live without it on my desktop, and I want it on my phone!
- Page scaling – in other words, making the page fit a smaller mobile screen, but still keep the layout, and being able to zoom in on bits of it. Not an original idea, but again, it’s a necessity!
- Decent shortcuts and favourites options
- The ability to add plug-ins, as on Firefox on your PC (if you’re reading this, Mozilla, do it. Do it now!)
All in all, then, rather exciting, and with this and Skyfire coming out in 2008, there’s going to be some rather good options for getting online on your mobile phone!

Nick: I think you are mistaking Firefox for Internet Explorer, which does indeed suck!
