A new service has been announced that will give Virgin Mobile customers the chance to text the galaxy.

Texts into Space will allow messages to be sent into the cosmos – and the operator is hoping its users will line up to put out a comment that will be beamed across the universe.

Billed as a "unique gift idea", Virgin Mobile customers will have their texts sent into space via a satellite in Cornwall at the price of a normal text. However, for a further £9.95 they can expect a Certificate of Transmission from SentForever.com.

The message can then be tracked online as it sails through infinity and passes cosmic milestones along the way.

Virgin Mobile spokesman Tim Dowling said: "We are quite literally over the moon at the thought of millions of wishes and messages of love being texted into space".

It was also recently announced by the network that users could now get free access to Windows Live Messenger with their mobile phones.
