Intel powered smartphones are set to be launched early next year.
Mobile phones using Intel chips are expected to be unveiled at industry events such as the Mobile World Congress or Consumer Electronics show.
The chip, which is codenamed Moorestown, is very power efficient to help extend battery life and has enough processing power to run features such as HD video, according to Intel.
It’s not yet known which smartphones will be using the Intel chips, with many already running on its rival ARM’s architecture such as the HTC Desire and Motorola Milestone. Apple developed its own chip for its devices such as the iPhone 4 16GB.
Intel CTO Justin Rattner told Wired that the company hoped to also move into the tablet market, adding chips for the devices would be available by the end of 2010.
He told the website: “Almost all the tablets at Computex (a trade show for PC makers held in Taiwan every year) were Intel-based devices. There’s a tremendous amount of interest and activity in the tablet space.”
However, Intel will need to make sure they’re not missing the boat with either market – the smartphone market is very established and the tablet market is growing with devices such as the Dell Streak and the Apple iPad hitting shops.

I wonder how the new Intel chip will compare with Apple’s A4 chip?
