People who opt for smartphones are downloading more games than any other application, according to an industry expert.

Greg Joswiak, vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple – which of course makes the iPhone – said the ease of accessibility and the range of games available was attractive to users.

He also said the online application platform was encouraging games developers.

A recent report by market research company NPD revealed more smartphone owners are playing games than using business related applications on their device.

It revealed seven out of the top ten selling applications for the iPod touch and iPhone are games and hundreds of games have been developed for the platform since its launch.

Mr Joswiak said: "Gaming has been the biggest category of the apps store – there are over 1,700 games available.

"Every customer has access to it and they can buy those games or applications without ever having to leave their house."
