Smartphone take-up ‘driven by innovation’

Smartphones are in abundance on the current market, with models such as the Apple iPhone 3G S 32GB White and the HTC HD2 recently becoming available.

The reason why such handsets are so popular, believes Anthony Keyworth, director of product marketing Orange UK, is due to the rapid development of technology making touchscreens and interaction increasingly functional and easy to use.

In addition, a greater use of cameras and better application interoperability means they are very convenient for owners, he adds, going on to say the app sector was “really interesting”.

“The applications which are successful are ones which are easy to use, interact well with other applications, interact well with networks and are customisable,” Mr Keyworth concludes.

His comments follow recent analysis by ABI Research, which found the final quarter of last year to be a strong three months for smartphone sales.

Nokia shipped 21 million handsets – more than its average 15 million – while Apple recorded its best ever period for such devices.
