Google’s Android operating system could soon be working in tandem alongside Skype devices, it has emerged.

The firm announced this week it has produced a lightweight version of its client that can be downloaded to Android-powered devices – which could enable T Mobile G1 users access to cheaper calls.

It has also been announced that the new software will be available for use on more than 100 other Java-enabled mobile phones.

Scott Durchslag, chief operating officer of Skype, said that the move addressed the vast number of mobile users that are looking for access to its web-based calling and messaging services.

"Nearly half the world’s population are mobile phone users today and we know that many people who already use Skype want the option to use Skype on their mobile phones," he added.

Google’s Android operating system is currently only available on the HTC-built T Mobile G1 – although it is thought many more handsets will feature the open source system by the end of 2009.
