Skype can now be used on mobiles, following the launch of a "lite version" of the system.

An updated beta version has been introduced which can be downloaded onto Android-powered devices in addition to over 100 Java-enabled mobile phones, according to the company.

This will mean millions of mobile phone users across the world will have greater access to Skype software, including those in the US who have not previously been able to use it.

Skype’s chief operating officer Scott Durchslag described the launch as a "major step forward" for the company.

"Nearly half the world’s population are mobile phone users today and we know that many people who already use Skype want the option to use Skype on their mobile phones," he stated.

The system allows people to make calls to other Skype users as well as landlines and mobile phones, to send and receive instant messages and to see when contacts are online.

It was recently announced that Android will also appear on non-mobile devices for the first time, according to T3.
