Nokia believes there will be a "wide appeal" for the new Skype application that is available to download from its Ovi Store.
The Skype client is based on the Symbian operating system and gives Nokia smartphone users worldwide the opportunity to use the calling technology when they are on the go with a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
Jo Harlow, senior vice-president for smartphones for Nokia, said Symbian had given the manufacturer more opportunities to bring handsets to people and services such as Skype will help with this.
She added: "We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users."
Nokia smartphone users will now be able to make Skype-to-Skype calls to other users as well as receive calls from their existing online number thanks to the service.
People may be interested in downloading the application on the new Nokia X6 device – a "polished effort" according to Gareth Beavis, who reviewed the handset for T3.
