Samsung Unpacked event – Samsung Jet unveiled

Unpacked event - Samsung Jet unveiledWell, they’ve been building it up for a few days, but now, the Samsung Unpacked event has finally gone down, and now, we all know what their new phone is. Dubbed as being ’smarter than a smartphone’, by their own press release, it’s the brand new Samsung Jet.

Only… I’m having trouble working out why it’s smarter than a smartphone…

As I can see it, there’s two main reasons why this phone is interesting. First is the processor inside the Samsung Jet, which runs at a rather zippy 800MHz. That’s pretty chuffin’ fast, although it still pales in comparison to the 1GHz chip in the Toshiba TG01. The other interesting bit is the interface, because it’s using a sort of 3D-cube version of TouchWiz, that lets you rotate round the faces of the cube, to choose different frontscreens.

Hmmm, can anyone say LG Arena…?

However, the bit that’s causing me some bewilderment at the ’smarter than a smartphone’ tag is the fact that the new cubic TouchWiz UI thing isn’t sitting on top of a smartphone OS. It’s the standard TouchWiz setup that you got on previous phones like the Tocco. So, I’m a bit flummoxed to work out why a feature phone OS is smarter than a smartphone OS.

Bizarre. Maybe they mean it’s ‘cos it’s got a faster processor?

Either way, the specs are as follows: 3.1 inch AMOLED screen, 5MP camera, HSDPA, WiFi (which is cool, because I just got my first ever WiFi Router today) and GPS, as well a brand new Webkit-based web browser called Dolfin.

I can’t help thinking, though, that something like the Samsung i8910 HD is a better purchase… but hey, a lot of people don’t want smartphones, but do want touchscreens, so it could still sell rather well…
