Remember all the excitement when the first 8MP phone got punted out onto the market? Well, it’s going to happen all over again, because we’re fast approaching a new era where 12MP is what constitutes a top-end camera phone, and a new preview of one of the main contenders in that battle’s popped up on GSMArena.
The Samsung Pixon 12.
Early indications seem to be that it’s shaping up to be one of the single best camera phones ever released. The 12 megapixel sensor is apparently stunning, and the contrast is set just right, so you get fine detail, without it being all jaggy and grainy. It’s also one of the few camera phones in the world to feature a 28mm lens, or, in layman’s terms, a really good, proper lens. And of course, you get a xenon flash, and all that other good stuff.
However, there was one feature that had me grinning like a loon, and that’s its touch focus. Yes, the Samsung Pixon 12 has touch focus. Nothing exciting there, quite a lot of phones have that feature nowadays. However, the Pixon 12 is a bit cleverer than that. Touch something on the screen to focus on it, yes, but if it’s a moving object you focus on, the focus reticule box thingy will actually follow that object round, to make sure it keeps focused on that object, even if it’s in motion.
Chuffing hell, that’s clever.
So, it looks like the Samsung Pixon 12 is going to be the first 12MP camera phone to go on sale. That’s no doubt going to wind Sony Ericsson up something rotten, since their 12MP Sony Ericsson Satio is due out later in the year. But really, there’s a clear difference between the two phones. I say if you want the best camera phone, it’s looking increasingly like the Samsung Pixon 12 will be the one you want. And if you want a proper smartphone (which this one isn’t), get the Symbian-powered Sony Ericsson Satio.
See? Dead easy.
