Imagine, for a second, that you’re Samsung. If you make the Samsung I7500, also called the Galaxy, how would you market it? Perhaps focus on its design, or maybe talk about its list of features, right?
No.
Apparently, what you do is listen to Pink Floyd till your brain goes all trippy, convince yourself that you’re Pixar, and make this work of genius:
That. Is. Awesome. And despite the patent lunacy (lunarcy, maybe? Sorry, couldn’t resist) on display, it actually makes sense, and hence moves from being ‘weird marketing’, into ‘inspired, genius marketing’. The ship is the Samsung I7500 itself, but with the warp nacelles nicked off the Enterprise (amusingly, it labels its engines with its internet speed, and says the crew capacity is 8Gb). And it’s piloted by a robot, ‘cos the phone runs on Android, right. And space, it’s not the final frontier any more no, it’s the Android Marketplace.
So, the little droid flies through the Marketplace, landing at various planets (like the ‘Games Planet’, ‘Translator Planet’ and so on), where it gets apps. After a life or death run to escape giant dice and playing cards (Lewis Carroll would be proud), he bounces into his phone-ship-thing, and heads back to planet Earth, where the user, right, is using the phone, and so, his journey round the Android Market is like the robot flying through space, or something.
So, let’s see: Phone that turns into something Starfleet would be proud of. Check. Having the phone-ship-thing look a bit like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey after it’s landed. Check. Sci-fi robot. Check. Tron reference with the bloke getting sucked into an electronic device. Check. Whole thing looking like it was made by Pixar after they’d had a bad acid trip. Check and WIN.
That is how you market a phone. Although the ‘Finance Planet’ sounds like my own personal hell. You’d have to change the line from 2001: A Space Odyssey, to say, “My god, it’s full of accountants!”
And I still prefer the Samsung i8910 HD…
