Samsung have yet ANOTHER 12MP camera phone in the works?

Samsung M8920 - 12MP plus 3x optical zoom! After the news that Samsung were entering the 12MP phone arena with the Pixon 12, news has popped up on GSMArena today that says that particular phone isn’t going to be their only 12MP shooter. Nope, the next one after that will be the Samsung M8920, according to reports, and it’s got one crucial advantage over every other 12-megger announced so far:

It’s got 3x optical zoom, as well!

As anyone vaguely interested in photography knows, in zoom terms, what ya want is optical zoom. If you’re a bit sketchy on the difference between that and digital zoom, it’s simple: digital zoom is a software feature that blows up a part of the screen to the whole screen, leaving it all pixelly and with a serious dose of the jaggies. Optical zoom is the one where the lens moves, giving you a close-up image that doesn’t go all pixelly and jaggy.

In other words, the Samsung M8920 may have the best camera out there, and it’s yet more proof that the Korean manufacturer’s real goal is actually world domination.

Of course, on the downside, it’s not a smartphone. What you get is Samsung’s own touchscreen OS, with TouchWiz as the front end. Nevertheless, as a phone for taking photos with, it looks like it’ll be second to none.

Still, now you’re getting a clearer picture of what the camera phone landscape is going to look like by the end of the year, and you can even start saying which of the big camera phones you should buy. If you want a stunning camera phone, but you’re not bothered about it being a smartphone, or it having optical zoom, get the Pixon 12.

If you want better close-up photos, but you’re still not bothered about it being a smartphone, get the Samsung M8920.

If high-end video’s your priority, then the Samsung i8910 HD is the obvious choice (and it even runs Symbian, so you get a smartphone, too, although the still camera’s only 8MP).

If you want pin-sharp photos and you want a super-high-end smartphone (or if you’re a Sony junkie, like me), get the Sony Ericsson Satio…

See? Simples!
