A persistent rumour’s been knocking around for a while, stating that O2 are going to lose exclusivity on the iPhone. It’s been neither confirmed nor denied by everyone involved (well they wouldn’t would they?), but still the rumour goes on. According to The Register, it seems we might now know a bit more about who could be soon selling the iPhone.
Allegedly, both Orange and T-Mobile are in talks to sell it.
Now, to be honest, this rumour has a bit of solid sense to it, especially when you consider which networks carry the iPhone overseas, specifically in France, where it’s on Orange, and Germany, where it’s on, you guessed it, T-Mobile. So, it seems logical to assume those two networks might be in the frame to sell it over here, as well. The rumour’s given added credence by the fact that O2 are the exclusive network for the Palm Pre, which may very well wind Apple up no end, and would partially go some way to explaining why they’re trying to get new network partners.
Well, that and the simple, basic fact of all businesses ever, which is something I’ve named, in honour of the movie Spaceballs, “The Search For More Money”.
Of course, there’s a bit of a catch, since the rumour states very firmly that they’d only be selling the iPhone 3G, not the new version, as the iPhone 3GS would still be an O2 exclusive.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave!
So, yes, there’s another two networks to add to the list of who might get the iPhone next, after the Vodafone forums hinted it would be them. We’ll find out soon enough, I suspect…
