New moves by Research In Motion (RIM) could see BlackBerry mobile phones become even more popular with business users, it has emerged.

RIM has announced it is working on new software that aims to make the professional applications relating to its BlackBerrys more helpful when users are away from the office.

The changes will involve a partnership with IBM that aims to build on the collaborative capabilities of RIM’s existing handsets through features such as the Symphony document viewer, Quickr, Domino Designer and XPages.

Bob Picciano, general manager for IBM Lotus Software, said the improvements should offer users a level of out-of-office productivity that can "keep their business moving, anytime, anywhere".

In addition, RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said the strengthening of the Lotus platform would "make BlackBerry smartphones even more effective in mobilising businesses around the globe."

Handsets currently available in the BlackBerry range include the Curve, Pearl and Storm – which is available exclusively on the Vodafone network.

Do you use a BlackBerry? And if so is it better for business or fun?
