There’s been a fair bit of talk, recently, about phones with so-called ‘pico projectors’ in them. But what is a pico projector? And why are phones with them said to be the next big thing?
Well, basically, a pico projector is a tiny, hand-held projector, just like your big ol’ slide projector that throws an image up onto a wall or other handy surface. Only it’s much, much, much smaller.
Also, they use technologies like LEDs and even lasers (ooh, lasers), to make the projector really small, and use remarkably little power, but still cast a bright, vivid image up on the wall, or screen, or whatever. Maaaaaany people are predicting this will be a massive feature of phones to come. And to be honest, there some validity to that, because as phones get smaller, there’s less room for a physical screen, so chucking the screen onto any available object could prove useful.
Oh, and let’s not forget that with mobile movies becoming a big thing (the Samsung i8910 HD is more or less born to be a movie device, with HD video), the pico projector will actually turn your phone into a mobile cinema, and watching films on a big, 5-foot screen (or as it may be, wall) has got to be better than a 3 inch screen.
So, are phones with pico projectors the future? Well, only time will tell, but they’re certainly one of the advanced technologies that are gaining a LOT of support. Hell, Samsung have already made a fully working pico projector phone (the one in the pic), so they’ve already started their march on the world…
