Derby City Council has chosen Orange to be its sole mobile communications provider in an attempt to reduce expenditure.

The organisation believes it can save around £200,000 thanks to the agreement and the move will also see the network provide employees with Blackberrys and dongles for use outside the office.

It is set to introduce 1,500 voice connections and Orange Wirefree Connection, which means there should be a cost reduction for calls between the local authority’s landline and mobile phones.

Robert Ainger, director of corporate for Orange UK, said he was "delighted" the company had been selected by the council.

The network managed to stave off competition from other operators which were invited to submit a quote.

This new agreement could increase the amount of Orange handsets used in the Derby area, which may include the Motorola Dext – a device featuring a qwerty slider keyboard and a five-megapixel camera.
