Orange planning to launch six Android handsets in 2009?

HTC Hero coming to Orange with 5 other phones? Now here’s an intriguing story, from the pages of Talk Android, stating Orange France may be planning to launch SIX new Android mobile phones this year. That’s a lot of Android phones, since there’s only one official Android phone on the market already.

Well, two, once the HTC Magic gets launched.

The quoted line-up is said to include the new HTC Hero (pictured), plus other phones from HTC, Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung and Motorola. Or, as they’re otherwise called, everyone except Nokia. Still, big operator support like that is something Google won’t be displeased with, certainly if it gets Android into more people’s pockets.

Oh, and also, nice to see Sony Ericsson in that list. That’s the first definitive (if the rumour’s true) confirmation that they’re even going to make an Android phone. And if they do, that means you’ve got three manufacturers, then, who run a combination of all 3 big smartphone operating systems, those OS-es being Symbian (eg/ the Sony Ericsson Idou), Windows Mobile and Google Android. World domination cometh, methinks (or, in the case of Nokia, more world domination).

Oh, and if you’re wondering why I’m running a story on a French network, it’s because if they do get six Android phones, it seems pretty likely we should get to see some of them on Orange UK…

Is there a criteria for Android phones that they have to look tacky ?

First there was the G1, then the Magic and now this. I didn’t think they could make one to look worse than the G1, but they’ve truly excelled themselves here

It’s probably in Google’s terms of service for using Android…

I have a G1 and I think it looks and feels better than a iPhone.

Plus as a developer the more phones out there that run the Android platform the more market there is. I like the openness of what Google is doing not the closed platform of Apple.

I’ve just seen the G1 and it is much better than some reports I’ve read. It is slimmer than my Nokia N95 and bigger screen. The interface is great and as a Linux user, I know the benefits of an open platform. It will give the closed platforms a run for their expensive OSs.
