New rules have been announced to help mobile phone shoppers buy with confidence, it has emerged.

Telecommunications and broadcasting watchdog Ofcom unveiled the measures this week, which are designed to ensure people get the exact deal on their handset that they agree to.

Aimed at policing cashback schemes, as well as the advertising of contract lengths, tariff details, pricing structures and coverage, the group explained these services should reflect what all customers are promised at the point of sale.

"If providers breach the rules, they could be fined up to ten per cent of relevant turnover," Ofcom advised.

The move follows an announcement earlier this week that could also impact mobile broadband customers.

It was noted by Ofcom that video-on-demand services would now need to adhere to European laws regarding decency, prejudice and fairness.

Online products like the BBC’s iPlayer, as well as similar services like 4oD, ITV Player, SkyPlayer and Demand Five will all fall under the new regulations.

Which of these services do you frequently use?
