O2 has announced plans to make improvements to its network and boost its customer facilities.

The carrier explained this week that it had a number of projects in development that would benefit subscribers that was being backed by significant financial investment.

According to the company, this will include the opening of 200 new sites across the London region alone in the next 12 months, with 40 of these set to be ready before Christmas.

It went on to say the changes would cost "hundreds of millions of pounds" and a spokesman for the firm explained that this would not be the first time it had made such moves in the service of its users.

Chief technology officer Derek McManus said: "Our £500 million investment over the last two years has enabled us to offer our customers the best products in the world, including the Apple iPhone and Palm Pre."

O2 is now the exclusive distributor for the latter handset, while the former is also on sale through Orange.
