Consumers across Europe and Russia are turning to Nokia as the trusted brand for GPS-enabled mobile phones, it has been suggested.

A new study conducted by Frost & Sullivan found that the manufacturer is the number one choice for mobile navigation services in both regions – which it adds is a rapidly expanding market.

Researchers found over 30 million handsets equipped with geographical software onboard were shipped during 2008 – a figure expected to rise to 80 million by the end of next year.

N Praveen Chandrasekar, program manager of telematics and infotainment at Frost & Sullivan, said the Finnish manufacturer was one company that had shone in the report.

He explained: "Nokia has clearly excelled in identifying growth opportunities in a maturing mobile handset market by integrating GPS in a large number of its handsets, making them navigation-ready."

Current devices now equipped with such technology include the recently launched Nokia N97 smartphone.
