The latest Gartner report looking at the market share of all the major global mobile phone manufacturers has been published – and it seems Nokia is still out on top.

According to the survey, the Finnish company managed to sell 36.8 per cent of all the handsets sold in the second quarter of 2009, while South Korean firm Samsung came in second place with a 19.3 per cent score.

Just behind this was another brand from the same country as the latter, as LG was confirmed as the third most popular brand with a 10.7 per cent market share.

Motorola was found to have a 5.6 per cent portion of the sector and Sony Ericsson managed a 4.7 per cent stake in the market – with the remaining devices sold by other manufacturers.

Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner, said Nokia should focus more on high-end models if it wanted to retain this lead, as its current successes were down to entry-level handsets.

Nokia models in the current line up include the N97, E71, 5800 and 5530.
