Nokia‘s partnership with Intel could have a big impact on the future of mobile phones, according to one expert.

A spokesman for ABI Research, a group which specialises in the manufacture of wireless semiconductor components, said the deal which was announced this week could mean exciting things for the sector.

Kevin Burden, practice director of mobile devices at the group, said the combined research and development power of both the Finnish mobile manufacturer and its processor specialist associate would be important in itself.

However, he added: "This collaboration will have a more significant impact on a device category beyond smartphones."

Intel and Nokia announced their strategic relationship on June 23rd and said open source Linux software applications was just one of the areas where they would focus attention.

Last week, the mobile phone maker launched the Nokia N97, a device it described as more akin to a portable computer when it was unveiled in December 2008.
