Nokia has announced that its new Ovi maps are averaging one download per second each day with over 1.4 million downloaded since January 21st this year.

It took the equipment, which now has free walk and drive navigation, one week to breach the one million mark.

Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president of Nokia, said he knew that the new technology would be a "game-changer".

He added: "The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation – and as a result looking for more location-aware software – is growing faster than even we predicted."

Mr Vanjoki said the results were "great news" for Nokia’s third party application developers because a base of users "hungry" for new apps had been created so quickly.

On January 31st China was leading the way in the downloading of Ovi maps, with the UK placed in third behind Germany.

Among the Finnish phone giant’s offerings is the Nokia E71, which includes full keyboard and 3.2-megapixel camera.
