One of the neat things about the Nokia N96, that I loved, was its wee little kickstand on the back, a bit of plastic that folded out, and let the phone stand on its side, for when you wanted to watch videos, or look at piccies, or what have you. However, the upcoming sequel, the Nokia N86, goes a step further, according to Symbian Guru, as it has an active kickstand.
Or, in other words, it’s not just a bit of plastic that opens up to let the phone stand up. It’s a bit of plastic that opens up to let the phone stand up, that also starts an app when you unfold it.
Ooh, that’s quite clever.
The cool part, though, is that you specify precisely which app you want the kickstand to start up. So, you can set it to automatically fire up the web, or the music player, or movies, or a whole host of other different apps, depending on what you want. Which is really pretty cool, although I can’t see much use of it outside of watching movies, the crucial point being that for things like web, e-mail, or what have you, where will the phone need to be?
Yup, in your hands, not standing up on a table in front of you…
Still, it’s a nice inclusion, since I’ve always liked camera phones that auto-turn-on the camera when you open the lens cover, and this is like version 2.0, next iteration of that. Might not make it a world beating Nokia (the Nokia N97 is surely going to have that crown, despite the N86 having an 8MP camera, too), but it’s still pretty cool.
Right, that’s it for today, folks, ‘cos it’s Bank Holiday Monday, all you nice people should be out there getting thoroughly and completely munted. I’d love to join you, I’m auditioning singers for the new band, today.
Hmmm, maybe I should wear my trousers like Simon Cowell…
