More interactive technologies could be heading to Nokia‘s line of mobile phones, after the company announced a new development partnership.

The Finnish manufacturer – which counts the Carbon Arte, N96 and 5800 XpressMusic among its current offerings – will work with the University of Southern California (USC) to look at new systems for its devices.

It is hoped the framework agreement will help to identify and create a host of new ways in which consumers can interact with the mobile web in areas such as media and entertainment.

Ulrich Neumann, professor in computer sciences for the USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering, explained that the partnership was a natural progression.

"It’s a great opportunity to work with visionary companies like Nokia that are investing in breakthrough research in visual recognition techniques for use on mobile devices," he added.

The Nokia N97, which has been described by the firm as "the world’s most advanced mobile computer", is expected to be launched later this year.
