The future of Nokia‘s multimedia smartphones was given a boost this week after the Finnish company announced an extended partnership with computer processor manufacturer Intel.

It was advised the deal would see both firms embark on a number of projects that could result in various integrated mobile phone technologies emerging, including developments in open source Linux software.

This latest move will mean work can start on an "architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset […] which will combine the performance of powerful computers with high-bandwidth mobile broadband communications".

Nokia’s announcement follows the launch of the N97 last week, a flagship device that the handset manufacturer called "the world’s most advanced mobile computer" when it was unveiled in December last year.

Also available now after being launched on Friday is the Nokia N86 – both of these devices went up against the Apple iPhone 3G S, which was put out on the same day.
