New Motorola ‘Backflip’ phone leaks online

Motorola Backflip shows its face onlineOoh, now this is intriguing. I’ve given Motorola some stick over the years, but it’s fair to say that their new raft of phones has shut me up, good and proper. Because they’re brilliant. The Motorola DEXT, for instance, is absolutely stunning. It’s a proper belter, and I really like it. And then, of course, there’s the Motorola Milestone, which is kicking all kinds of bottom in America, where it’s been released as the Droid.

So, in other words, Motorola are seriously doing no wrong, at the minute.

And now, another new phone of theirs has leaked on Phandroid, and I am, again, really liking the look of it. There’s some confusion over what its name might be, with three different possibles (Motus, Backflip and Enzo) rumoured. But I’m going to go with Backflip, ‘cos it’s the one that’s closest to what the phone’s actually all about. If you look at the pic, you’ll see what I mean. It looks as if the screen should slide down in front of the keys, right?

But then, you’ll notice that the bit where the two panels overlap is a bit small for any kind of sliding mechanism. Oh, and if you look down at the bottom-left-hand corner, you’ll see a camera. A 5MP camera. And then you work out the spatial topography thingies of it (or just look at the pics on the link, as I did), and come to the same realisation I did. It’s not a slide phone at all. It’s a flip phone.

But it’s a flip phone that opens backwards, which logically means that when it’s closed, the keyboard faces backwards, too.

Ooh, I’ve never seen a phone designed like that before, this could be rather interesting. The other cool part, as well, is that when you flip the keyboard round to the front, it reveals a touchpad on the back of the phone, so for scrolling round websites, for instance, you could do it on the touchpad, instead of dabbing your finger all over the screen.

That’s clever, that is. Oh, and since the Backflip (or whatever it ends up being called) is running the MOTOBLUR interface, it’ll be packed to the gills with loads of social networking type thingies. I tell ya, if you’d said to me, three years ago, that Motorola would be making what are very possibly the most exciting phones on the market (the HTC HD2 notwithstanding, as I want that phone reeeeeeeeeeeeally badly), I’d have probably said something rude to you.

And I’d have been wrong. Because they are doing. Motorola, right now, rock more than just about anybody else on the market. So, yes, my message in this blog is this:

Motorola, with the DEXT and the Milestone, you have become awesome. Not just good, but awesome. So, get the Backflip unveiled, and make yourselves even more awesome.

And not that I want to play with it or anything, but, erm, pretty please?
