New LG Chocolate – video reveals unorthodox new design

New LG Chocolate has weird screen size

The other day, I did a blog post about the new LG Chocolate, and how some new spy shots had emerged, that showed absolutely nothing about the phone, other than that it looked to be pretty cleek, and had red bits on it.

Well, today, a new video’s been unveiled that tells us a lot more about the phone, if it’s genuine. And overall, it’s so polished, that I’d have to say it does look really rather genuine to me. Here, see for yourself:

See? Either that is the single best fan-made product video ever, or what we’re seeing is the real thing. Assuming it is genuine, we now know a lot more about the new LG Chocolate, the 4th phone to be released under LG’s “Black Label” series. First up, it’s got a capacitive touchscreen… and we know that because it supports multitouch. Yes, you can do the infamous pinchy motion on this new phone. Oh, and on top of that screen, there’s a tempered glass coating, which should theoretically make it a damn sight harder to scratch.

This can only be a good thing!

Specs-wise, you’re looking at HSDPA running at 7.2Mbps, and WiFi, and a camera. I don’t know how big a camera, as the megapixel count was washed out on the video, but if it ain’t got an 8MP cam, like the LG Viewty Smart, it’ll be a shame. Oh, and the UI looks like it’s S-Class, as seen in all of LG’s latest touchscreen phones.

However, the thing that struck me most about the video is the screen itself, specifically the weird aspect ratio. Hold the phone upright, and it’s all long and thin, but it makes more sense when you turn it on its side, because you get a proper, really-really-widescreen mode. The aspect ratio is said to be 21:9, whereas even widescreen tellies are only 16:9.

That’s a bizarre screen size, that is, and it makes the phone really long and thin, too. I reckon it’ll be about the same width as the Sony Ericsson X1, but about three-quarters of an inch longer.

Put it this way, never before has the name “Chocolate”, or for that matter the phrase “candybar form factor”, been so appropriate…
