A new partnership has been announced by two mobile networks which could have some significant environmental benefits.

Telefonica, the company behind O2, has teamed up with Vodafone in a deal that will see both carriers share a number of operating facilities – which could have a bigger impact on its overall business.

It is hoped that by sharing a number of assets including phone masts contract prices could be made more affordable as well as more environmentally-friendly.

Matthew Key, chief executive of Telefonica Europe, said: "By reducing our costs in areas of the business that customers don’t see, we can ensure that we invest in areas they truly value."

Earlier this month, O2 announced it would be offering the Apple iPhone 3G on a number of new 24-month contracts.

This has been followed by rumours that the pay-as-you-go price of the handset is about to receive a price cut – although this has yet to be commented on by Apple or O2.
