Ok, I am going to say straight off the bat that I’m going to be a good boy when writing this blog post, as the content of it, although it would normally make me snigger at someone else’s expense, is actually quite serious, and a deeply unpleasant situation for the two people involved.
The story begins, according to the BBC, in the Fayetteville, Arkansas branch of McDonald’s, where Phillip Sherman was presumably having his tea. The problem, though, was that when he left, he forgot to take his mobile phone with him. That wouldn’t have been such a massive problem (mobile phone insurance to the rescue, eh), except that his wife had sent him naughty pics of herself, which he’d stored on the mobile phone.
Ah. That does tend to complicate things…
Sherman promptly rang the McDonald’s to ensure they hold onto his mobile phone so it didn’t get stolen, until he could pop down and collect it. Which they agreed to do.
It’s the next bit that’s deeply unsettling, and my sympathies go out to Mrs Sherman for what happened next. You see, the photos of her didn’t stay on the phone, and before she knew it, they were posted up on the internet, along with (and this bit really is out of order) her name, address and contact details, meaning she subsequently got a load of offensive calls and texts about the pictures.
That is bang out of order, that, and it’s why the Shermans are suing McDonald’s Corporation, the owner of the franchise involved and the restaurant’s manager, saying they have suffered emotional distress, embarrassment and damage to their reputations.
It’s also why I’m not doing this blog post with my normal snigger-y, ‘12-year-old sense-of-humour‘ head on, because frankly, no-one should have to go through that kind of embarrassment.
However…
I do have two suggestions for the Shermans in future naughty piccie sessions. First, given that the most popular phone in America was the RAZR and is now the iPhone (which is the phone Sherman is said to have left in McDonald’s), and since both of those mobile phones have incredibly inept cameras, I’d say go for a better camera phone next time, and you’ll get better pics.
So, first suggestion, get the Sony Ericsson C905, which comes in at 8 megapixels, and you’ll take better photos, even in the dark (and yes, I realise that is the single weirdest sales pitch in history, but hey, that’s how these things go).
Second, if your partner sends naughty pics to your mobile phone, for gawd’s sake don’t lose it…
