The popularity and success of a recent online event could mean good news for mobile broadband subscribers, if one expert is to be believed.

According to a spokeswoman for media data specialist group Screen Digest the online broadcast of England’s football match against Ukraine was a big hit and could change the way people watch in the future.

Marie Bloomfield, an analyst at the organisation, explained that with close to half a million fans logging on to the pay-per-view event on Saturday October 10th, it is clear there is a market for the platform.

In addition, she explained that as there had been no major technical problems, it seems the majority of people were happy with the service.

However, as this particular web-exclusive happened due to the closure of Setanta – which previously held the rights – it was unlikely that the current systems would receive a shake up anytime soon.

"Premium sports content has always underpinned the pay TV business – it’s something that consumers are willing to pay for and, particularly because it is time sensitive, they want to see it live," Ms Bloomfield added.

The Fifa World Cup qualifier was the most subscribed to pay-per-view online sports event ever in the UK, according to specialists at Perform.
