A new study suggests more people are turning to their mobile phones for breaking news than ever before.

The study, published by 3 Mobile this week, said the announcement of the death of global pop legend Michael Jackson was one particular time in which handsets were being utilised as a key source of information.

It was noted that the network saw "a record number of hits" on its Planet 3 mobile web portal with clicks on a link dedicated to the story receiving more than any other before.

David Kerrigan, head of internet services at 3 Mobile UK, said it was this type of data that reflected the current level of reliance people have on their devices for instant news.

"Pay-as-you-go our customers are increasingly using the web on their phones to snack on information and then share news and experiences through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter," he added.

The network also announced new roaming charges for its customers travelling within the EU this week.
