Mobile side of VoIP ‘growing’

The mobile phones side of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is beginning to "blossom", according to a research expert.

Diane Myers, a directing analyst for VoIP and Internet Protocol Multimedia Services at Infonetics Research, said that the VoIP market has "matured" and become "a highly reliable service in most deployments, particularly in fixed-line communications".

She added that the mobile part of VoIP is far from mainstream, but it is "growing in options and innovative offerings".

Miss Myers’ comments come as roaming rates for the UK and US were reduced after a product launch by VoIP provider Truphone.

A new SIM will be given to customers, which offers local rates for any country where Truphone is in business.

Users no longer need to use dial back systems or swap around SIM cards with the Truphone Local Anywhere service, available in both the UK and US.

Miss Myers said the service was "exactly the type of innovation most people expect out of VoIP providers."

VIOP is definitely the way of the future. It’s exciting to see the new technologies being developed. I am an electrical engineering and programmer, and although I don’t work in the VOIP field, I am great interested by it.
