Mid-market mobile phones will be much improved this year, according to an industry expert.
Conrad Longmore, editor of Mobile Gazette, said it is likely that 2010 will see "mid-market handsets becoming progressively smarter".
Mr Longmore mentioned Samsung’s Bada and Nokia’s Symbian S60 as two platforms which will increase the capabilities of smartphones this year.
His comments come after a survey found that more than one billion people will own a smartphone in 2013.
Research and knowledge-based consulting company Futuresource Consulting’s year-end forecasts for 2009 showed smartphone sales at 17 per cent of all handset sales.
But Mr Longmore added: "Predicting the future of the smartphone market is tricky, because there is no clear definition of what a smartphone really is."
He noted that 2010 could be the year of a fourth generation iPhone, which could trigger many customers to upgrade their handset.
Gartner, a research and advisory company, has forecast that smartphones will make up 38 per cent of all handsets in 2013.
