Mobile phones should have access to social networking sites and email at all times to meet demand, one commentator says.

Leigh Geary, from online mobile news forum CoolSmartPhone.com, said consumers expect to be able to use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube "all the time".

He added: "They don’t expect a big bill for it either, and networks are slowly realising that, in order to sell these phones, they must offer a competitive data plan."

Mr Geary says that handsets should have an internet connection all the time and that data is "crucial" in the sale of the devices.

His comments come after International Data Corporation, a market research firm, found that 54.5 million units of smartphones were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2009, an increase of 39 per cent from the same period a year before.

And sales for the whole of 2009 were up 15.1 per cent on 2008′s yearly total.
