Mobile phone companies are moving from hardware to software development, according to the Times.
Writing for the newspaper, James Ashton notes companies are launching various models, including the Android by Google, which "is gaining traction with handset makers".
He adds a wireless service by Microsoft – named My Phone – synchronises data between a handset and a website, allowing the user to back up files.
"Both Microsoft and Nokia are due to reveal applications stores similar to Apple‘s that let consumers download tools including games and mapping software," the column states.
However, members of the Mobile Entertainment Forum predict revenue growth for the mobile industry will be 27 per cent.
In other news, a survey by the GSMA has revealed the most visited websites on mobile devices are mobile operator resources.
Second in the league table was found to be Google, while Facebook, Yahoo! and the BBC were third, fourth and fifth respectively.
