The number of cloud-based mobile phone applications could increase, according to an industry expert.

Steve Reynolds, chairman of the Mobile Data Association (MDA), a not-for-profit industry association, said it is a "natural progression to migrate to cloud computing".

He said the mobile phone industry is in a position to "exploit, utilise and deploy cloud-based services probably more than the server and infrastructure side of the industry on the basis that [the mobile phone] is a connective device".

Mr Reynolds added that customers only have to pay for what storage they use thanks to cloud computing so it has a unique selling point.

Forecasts by Juniper Research predict that cloud-based mobile applications will have revenue of nearly £5.85 billion in 2014.

The report stated that enterprise applications will make up most of the revenues over the next five years.

The study also pointed out the adoption of mobile broadband services is one place where growth will need to come from if the predictions are to come to fruition.
