The number of apps downloaded by consumers across the globe is set to grow from seven million last year to nearly 50 million in 2012.
A new report, commissioned by Getjar and published by consulting group Chetan Sharma, said the compound annual growth rate of such software will hit 92 per cent and lead to a total of $17.5 billion (£11.45 billion) in revenue from paid downloads, virtual goods and advertising – up from $4.1 billion in 2009.
However, varying business models and "creative strategies" will be needed in emerging markets to take advantage of the app industry’s dynamics, the paper added.
"Overall, by enhancing discovery, improving user experience, dropping price barriers and increasing developer revenue share, the apps ecosystem can continue to prosper," Chetan Sharma concluded.
Apps currently available for handsets such as the Apple iPhone 3G S 16GB Black include PocketGuitar, Flick Fishing, Photogene and tap-and-tilt game Rolando.
