A manufacturer more noted for its innovative range of notebooks is to begin making Android-powered mobile phones, according to reports.

T3 states this week that following this week’s launch of the T Mobile G1, the first handset to be equipped with Google’s next generation operating system, Asus has expressed an interest in producing a phone which uses the platform.

It notes that this "G1 killer" could be made available as soon as early 2009 and adds that the 3G smartphone will be available initially in the company’s native market Taiwan before being "customised" for the rest of the world.

"Asus already produces smartphones, but with Windows Mobile 6 as its operating system," the article concludes, noting its recently-launched P552w handset was also impressive.

The manufacturer has had a number of successes with its ultra-compact laptops, scooping the Gadget of the Year title from Stuff magazine in September for its tiny Eee PC notebook.
