According to Pocket Lint, Bill Gates has stated categorically that Microsoft won’t be making a physical “Microsoft-phone”, to compete against the Apple iPhone. Which, when you think about it, is the probably a very sensible move on Microsoft’s part.
Think about it, and consider the facts:
1. They’ve sunk millions upon millions into Windows, right from the days of CE, through Pocket PC, right up to where we are today, with Windows Mobile, soon to be reinvigorated with full finger-touch and gesture controls(if the rumour is correct) as Windows Mobile 7.
2. Windows Mobile is used in a vast number of handsets from the HTC TyTN II to the Samsung i600, from the MDA Vario III to a super-secret upcoming Sony Ericsson phone.
3. Microsoft have no experience of building the hardware needed to make a viable mobile phone.
4. If they did make one, they’d take sales away from the other handsets that use Windows Mobile.
5. If those other companies lose sales on Windows Mobile phones, they’ll stop selling them, and Microsoft loses revenue.
Oh, and let’s not forget, Microsoft is nowhere near as exciting a brand as Apple (or, at least it isn’t perceived as one, and perception is everything in this biz!)
So, it’s definitely a good idea that Microsoft stick to what they do best. I think we all know a Microsoft-phone wouldn’t stand a hope in hell of competing against the iPhone. Windows Mobile on the other hand…

Bizarre comment, what’s that all about?
Microsoft are playing a very sensible game there, stick to what they do best and stop making physical things, they must have lost oodles on the XBox’s….
