LG Watch Phone will launch on Orange UK in August

LG GD910 Watch Phone to launch on Orange in AugustThere was a time, in the not too distant past, when I mithered constantly, all the time, about getting a watch phone. Oh, how I banged on about being able to recreate the joys of living in a Bond film or a Dick Tracy comic, only without getting shot at.

According to T3.com, the UK’s first watch phone (at least, to my knowledge, it’s the UK’s first) is going to go on sale in August.

It’s the LG GD910 Watch Phone, and it’s going to be a network-exclusive, but surprisingly, it’s not O2 (surprising, what with the Palm Pre O2-exclusivity being announced today, as well). Nope, the LG Watch Phone is going to available exclusively on Orange. So, all’s well, right? The LG Watch Phone is going on the network I’m already on, and which I plan to stay on, and so, I’ll be able to get one, and everything’s hunky-dory, right?

Well, no…

Y’see, I’m not the same bloke I was when I started doing this blog, what, two years ago now? Something weird has happened to me, in that I’ve actually grown up. Well, alright, maybe not grown up that much at all, really, but alas, I’ve grown out of the idea of wanting a watch phone. I like big screens on my phones, and fast processors, and all that gubbins, and there’s just no way a watch phone can ever have a big screen. Of course, one also has to factor in the realisation I had about watch phones in general.

You talk into them by, essentially, holding your wrist up to your face, and acting like Dick Tracy.

In other words, you’re going to look a tosspot (if Radio 4 can say that at 4 in the afternoon, so can I!) using one.

Oh, of course, there’s one final contributing factor to why I don’t want one. The price. Sure, the LG Watch Phone is a gorgeous bit of kit (looking like tosspot using it notwithstanding), and yes, the workmanship on it is absolutely mind-boggling. LG have done good, believe me, it’s solidly built and I have no quibbles, there.

But it costs a grand.

One thousand English pounds.

Er, ok, it’s really well made, but at that price, I reckon I’ll pass, ta. You could get the LG Viewty Smart for that… in fact, you could get three of ‘em for that price, and the Viewty Smart’s inherently a better phone (’cos it has a bigger screen, a phenomenal camera, and you won’t look a complete tool using one).

So, I’ll pass on the Watch Phone, thanks all the same…

Would you buy the LG Watch Phone? Are you shocked that Technical Markus has suddenly developed some kind of rudimentary ‘money sense’? Leave us a comment and have your say!
