By now, the world and its dog knows that Windows Mobile 6.5 is due to hit the market in October, but now, we’re getting some idea of the first phones it’s going to appear in. Obviously the one that’s got me most excited is the Sony Ericsson X2. ‘Cos it’s ace. And it will be mine.
However, they’re not the only ones that are using WinMo 6.5. It was an absolute no-brainer that HTC would get in on the act, as well.
According to IntoMobile, their first WinMo 6.5 phone is going to be the HTC Touch2, or, as I like to call it, the artist formerly known as HTC Mega. And it’s a phone that’s got ‘entry-level smartphone’ written all over it. Well, metaphysically, obviously. Not literally, although I’ll concede it’d be funny to see someone heading towards the HTC Touch2, with a biro and determined look on their face…
Hehe, I like that image…
Ironically, the phone it most reminds me of, looks-wise, is the HTC Touch HD. Similar curvy bits at the bottom, y’see, and the back panel is almost a dead ringer. And that’s ironic, when you consider that the HTC Touch2 is further from the Touch HD, in terms of hardware spec, than any other phone the manufacturer makes, mainly down to the screen. With the HTC Touch2, you get a 2.8 inch screen, and although WinMo 6.5 is all finger friendly, that screen seems a tad on the small side to me.
The other specs are as you’d expect from an entry-level smartphone. The camera’s a 3 megapixel jobbie, and of course, it comes with HSDPA, WiFi and GPS.
So, all in all, while it’s definitely a competent phone, I can’t help feeling that the first phone they made using the new whizzy, zippy version of WinMo should have been a bit less underwhelming, especially when the HTC Touch Diamond2, with an earlier version of the OS, soundly thrashes it in terms of both looks and power…
