HTC phones to get free WinMo 6.5 upgrade

HTC phones to get free WinMo 6.5 upgradeOctober marks the occasion when Windows Mobile moves over to version 6.5, and we already know a few phones that’ll be using it (Sony Ericsson X2, anyone?). However, according to WMPoweruser, it’s not just new phones that will be getting access to it. Nope, if you own either a, HTC Touch Diamond2, an HTC Touch Pro2 or an HTC Snap, then you can get in on the WinMo 6.5 action, as well.

Oh and even better, this isn’t just a rumour or a cracked version of the new OS; HTC themselves are providing the download, and it’ll let you officially change your phone over to Windows Mobile 6.5. The upgrade will also come with TouchFLO 3D included, so you don’t have to muck about having to download and install that over the top of your shiny new Windows skin, the software update does everything for you.

Let’s be honest, it was an obvious thing for them to do. We already know Windows Mobile 6.5 will work just fine on an HTC Touch Diamond2, because we’ve seen video footage of a Microsoft rep doing just that. And it ran very smoothly. So, the list of incompatibility issues will be as long as a list with nothing in it (I admit, that analogy could use some work, and made me sound like Baldrick, but you get the point).

Ooh, and I’ve just thought, I know someone who has an HTC Touch Pro2. I wonder if he’d let me stick 6.5 on his phone. Hmmm, might be worth a try, that…

Final thought: presumably the version of WinMo 6.5 for the HTC Snap isn’t the touchscreen version. There’d be little point, really, since the HTC Snap doesn’t have a touchscreen. That one could be interesting to see, since we’ve only ever seen WinMo 6.5 running on touch phones up till now.

There’s always a downside, though, and in this case, it’s the fact that the upgrade’s only been announced in and around Germany, so far, so there’s always the outside chance only Germany will get it, although I really rather hope that’s not the case…
